On loan to RKO, Grant plays a cockney alongside Hepburn’s Sylvia Scarlett (their first on-screen pairing), a con artist’s daughter who dresses as a boy and flees to the UK to escape the authorities. This early role, a compelling balance of light and dark, is a fine example of how Grant began to recreate himself film by film in order to become the star he was destined to be.
