The Young Lions

A shy New York Jewish shop assistant sees combat action and befriends drafted lounge singer Dino.

USA 1958
Directed by Edward Dmytryk
With Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, Hope Lange, Maximilian Schell
Running time 167min
Certificate PG

After the car accident limited his facial mobility, Clift refined his style so that he somehow inhabited a role through sheer force of concentration. The pared-down approach is highly effective in this thoughtful WWII chronicle as his shy New York Jewish shop assistant sees combat action and befriends drafted lounge singer Dino – certainly contrasting favourably with a preening, superficial Brando as a caring German officer out of sync with his Nazi comrades.
