Harold Brown was the BFI Archive’s first preservation officer. He pioneered a method to identify early films by their physical characteristics, which has been used by film archivists worldwide since the 1960s. To commemorate the centenary of his birth we welcome independent researcher and film historian Camille Blot-Wellens, who will explore Brown’s contribution to early cinema and the continuing relevance of his methodology today. FIAF general secretary Christophe Dupin will join her to talk about Harold Brown the man. Hosted by BFI curator Bryony Dixon.

Tickets £6.50

A new, expanded edition of Brown’s seminal Physical Characteristics of Early Films as Aids to Identification (edited by Camille Blot-Wellens) will be published shortly by FIAF.
