A watershed film for Straub-Huillet, their years-in-the-making feature debut is an off-centre anti-biopic, featuring acclaimed harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt as Johann Sebastian Bach and Christiane Lang-Drewanz as his eponymous wife. Her fictional journal gives the film its connective narrative tissue while emphasising the vital role played by the woman behind the great man. In single-take scenes, recorded with live sound, Leonhardt works his way through chronologically arranged selections from Bach’s oeuvre – a portrait of the artist through his art and his art alone.

See the screening on Sat 2 Mar 18:25 featuring an intro by Barbara Ulrich, philosopher, editor of BACHFILM-Box and collaborator of Jean-Marie Straub.
