En rachâchant gets to the anti-authoritarian heart of Marguerite Duras’ Ah! Ernesto!, about a boy who is wise beyond his years. Class Relations is a balefully beautiful black-and-white film: Straub-Huillet’s imagining, featuring Harun Farocki, of Franz Kafka’s incomplete novel Amerika. Of Kafka’s characters, Straub has said they ‘appear helpless as they are confronted with something that is difficult to grasp directly, something that is not the “fate” of the Greeks, but produced by industrial society.’

See the screening on Wed 20 Mar 18:00 introduced by Helen Hughes, University of Surrey.
