Focused for once on a working-class protagonist, this follows factory worker Aldo (Cochran) though an impoverished, wintry Po Valley after his lover (Valli) suddenly ends their affair. Accompanied by their daughter, he seeks work and solace, but times are tough. Episodic yet fluid, mist-filled yet lucid, downbeat but strangely dynamic in its halting progress, this visually exquisite film eloquently evokes Aldo’s tortured soul.
