Gold Diggers of 1933
+ intro by Lucy Bolton, Queen Mary University of London
Enjoy Busby Berkeley’s weird and wonderful choreography, set to classics such as 'We're in the Money.'
Dir Mervyn LeRoy
With Warren William, Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Ginger Rogers
A musical from and for the Great Depression. The plot (such as it is) sees songwriter Brad Roberts (Powell) defy his rich family in courting chorine Polly (Keeler); meanwhile Al Dubin and Harry Warren’s songs and Busby Berkeley’s weird, wonderful and suggestive choreography boast a dollars-clad Rogers singing ‘We’re in the Money’ and a bleak parade of jobless ex-soldiers trudging through ‘My Forgotten Man.'
