Hurt, transformed by 12 hours of incredible make-up, plays the real-life Joseph Merrick (re-named John for the film). Rescued from a freak show by Dr Frederick Treves, Merrick finds himself subjected to similar morbid curiosity by the medical profession and members of Victorian high society. Hurt’s quietly magnificent performance, combined with an extraordinary depiction of Victorian London, provides a haunting and memorable tour de force from director David Lynch.
