Synopsis

Polanski’s feature debut – one of the most impressive in all cinema – is a model of modest but imaginatively rich filmmaking. Charting what happens when a married couple setting out for a weekend’s yachting pick up a young hitchhiker, it introduces many of the director’s abiding themes: attraction and insecurity, aggressive power play, the threat of violence. Dramatically tense, psychologically astute, beautifully played by its cast of three, it also boasts an exhilarating jazz score by Krzysztof Komeda.
