When beautiful socialite Irene (Lombard) ‘adopts’ a homeless victim of the Depression (Powell) as her butler, his behaviour and intelligence first shock then provoke reflection among her family and friends. As with most Hollywood films, the script is highly ambivalent about wealth, power and social inequality, but La Cava’s sharp direction and the performances of a marvellous cast work comedic wonders.
