Our biennial weekend showcase of the best recent anime. Read more

Synopsis

Anime is for everyone! Justin Johnson presents our round-up of Japan's finest, including a chance to rediscover Akira on the big screen.

Our biennial weekend showcase of the best recent anime boasts an eclectic mix of different genres and styles, with titles such as Studio Ghibli's much anticipated From Up on Poppy Hill and BFI regular Makoto Shinkai's Children Who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below, which firmly moves him from ranking as ‘up and coming' animator to ‘established' director. A frequent misconception is that anime is invariably violent, or only for adults, but titles such as A Letter to Momo and Oblivion Island are perfectly suitable for children. We also have UK premieres of Full Metal Alchemist 2 (featuring a Q&A with special guests Kazuya Murata and Masahiko Minami) and The Princess and the Pilot as well as a screening of Gintama: the Movie and our closing treat, an opportunity to watch anime classic Akira (released on Blu-Ray last year).
