Synopsis

After initially puzzling the critics, The Shining’s star grew brighter in the decades following its release to gain rightful status as a masterpiece of horror. Testing and resisting the conventions of the genre, Kubrick showed that horror can match the sophistication of the arthouse. In this roundtable session a prestigious panel discuss this critical trajectory, and what exactly makes this complex film inspiring for critics, filmmakers and audiences. With director Ben Wheatley, critics Michel Ciment and Kim Newman, Kubrick’s long-standing collaborator Jan Harlan, and chaired by producer Tanya Seghatchian.
