GW Pabst’s adaptation of Brecht and Kurt Weill’s stage hit makes a few changes and drops some songs, but its anti-capitalist thrust and its acerbic view of society as uniformly rotten remain intact. Following gang-boss Mackie Messer (or ‘Mack the Knife’) as he deals with bankers, thieving beggars, corrupt cops and the various women in his life, the film is at once stylish and forceful.

The screening on Wed 23 May will be introduced by film programmer Margaret Deriaz.
