Synopsis

Sally El Hosaini’s debut feature is a strikingly real and un-clichéd glimpse of young men running with a gang on a Hackney housing estate. The charismatic Rashid dabbles in dealing, sneaks out to meet his girlfriend and arrives at his Egyptian family’s home with a flat screen TV for his younger teen brother Mo, who idolizes Rashid and longs to be a part of this lifestyle. After a moment of almost inevitable violence, directed at Rashid’s closest friend, Mo is pulled into the gang just when Rashid realises his need to escape from it. When Mo discovers secrets Rashid is keeping, both boys’ worlds and loyalties are turned around and tested. Intelligent and moving, this film is definitely not typical London gangland fare.
