In one of her better early roles, Lupino plays a spirited young woman who barely misses a beat when she’s kidnapped by Mexican bandits so besotted by gangster movies that they model themselves (disastrously) on Chicago mobsters. A comic operetta with so-so-songs, it keeps bowling along nicely thanks to plenty of delightful gags and Mamoulian’s endlessly inventive approach to parody.
