The Rape of Recy Taylor
+ intro by Chardine Taylor Stone, Cultural Producer and Activist
A documentary about the brave young woman whose assault case was picked up by Rosa Parks.
Dir Nancy Buirski
A troubling and timely investigative documentary about Recy Taylor, a young woman and mother who refused to remain silent about her horrific assault in Alabama in 1944. Rosa Parks, the renowned activist and secretary for the NAACP in Montgomery, picked up Taylor’s case. Today, this urgent work attempts to redress a continuing denial of racism, identified recently by author Toni Morrison. Extensive interviews combine with fragments of ‘race films’ – low-budget movies made in defiance of early Hollywood’s exclusion of the black community.
Tickets for this screening are available at the usual African Odyssey price of £6.50.
