Ex-athlete Tommie Smith joins us to discuss the impact of his iconic black-gloved salute.

This is the story behind one of the most iconic images of the 20th century; of American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos on the podium at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico, holding up a black-gloved salute in a silent protest for civil rights. The documentary, narrated by Colin Salmon, asks what inspired them to make this courageous gesture, why it carried such a powerful message, and what happened afterwards. We’re pleased to welcome Tommie Smith to the BFI stage to mark the 50th anniversary of an event that reshaped public perceptions of equality world-wide.
