Bergman’s remarkable chamberwork about the island encounter between an actress who’s suddenly decided to speak no more and the talkative nurse overseeing her convalescence is one of cinema’s most penetrating explorations of the vampiric aspects of creativity: the patient feeds off her protector’s confessions. Partly autobiographical in its critique of the artist’s parasitic tendencies, the film is superbly scripted, shot, edited and performed.

The screening on Wednesday 5 September will be introduced by Dr Claire Thomson, Senior Lecturer in Scandinavian Film at UCL.
