Robert Rossen’s fine adaptation of Jack London’s novel has Lupino and Garfield as fugitives aboard a hellish sealing ship captained by the psychopathically tyrannical ‘Wolf’ Larsen (Robinson), who’s engaged in a battle of wits with a left-leaning writer (Knox). A tense philosophical drama performed to perfection by all involved and moodily shot by Sol Polito, it’s one of Warner Bros’ darkest movies.
