Raintree County

An expansive melodrama ripe with Southern Gothic clichés and starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.

USA 1957
Directed by Edward Dmytryk
With Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Marie Saint, Lee Marvin, Nigel Patrick
Running time 166min
Certificate PG

Hoping to recapture the magic of Gone with the Wind, MGM poured resources into this Civil War epic, which Clift accepted out of loyalty to his confidante and co-star Taylor. The underwritten lead proved the least of his problems, though, when his near-fatal car smash halted production – only to resume with the challenge of disguising his facial injuries. It adds a grisly fascination to an expansive melodrama ripe with Southern Gothic clichés.
