A charismatic presence in many of his own films, Fassbinder stars in his debut feature as a petty criminal whose desire for freedom is undermined by his emotional needs. Influenced by Straub and Godard, it combines cool artifice with deadpan wit and countless cinematic references. Fassbinder described his would-be gangsters as ‘people who have seen a lot of gangster films’.
