A Bergman-scripted tale of a woman caught between two men indulging in increasingly dangerous emotional games.
Dir Liv Ullmann
With Lena Endre, Erland Josephson, Krister Henriksson, Thomas Hanzon
Alone in an isolated cottage, a writer (Josephson) summons his conscience/muse (a superb Endre), who recounts her painful story of adultery, jealousy, guilt and recrimination. The Bergman-scripted tale of a woman caught between two men indulging in increasingly dangerous emotional games was inspired by a holiday he took years earlier in Paris; the autobiographical derivation shows in the film’s raw, unflinching emotional honesty.
