On their island farm, Eva and Jan Rosenberg go about their daily routine almost as if a nearby civil war wasn’t happening; once caught up in it, however, they start to see each other, and their relationship, differently. Avoiding sensationalism to focus on essentials, Bergman demonstrates the fragility of ‘civilisation’ and the complexity of emotional commitment, eliciting superb performances from Ullmann, von Sydow and Björnstrand.
