An ambitious architect and his wife learn that their six-year-old son was swapped at birth with the child of a suburban shopkeeper. Now, the parents must decide whether to exchange the boys they have raised. The most melodramatic of Kore-eda’s family films asks probing questions about gender, class, life-work balance, nature versus nurture and, above all, what it really means to be a father.
