Scripted by Ayn Rand from her own first novel, this engagingly strange slice of expressionist symbolism sees Cooper as an uncompromising modernist architect, determined not to yield to the cautious conformism of the world around him. Though Rand’s charged dialogue sometimes tends towards the overly ‘philosophical’, the robust performances, Robert Burks’ striking images and Vidor’s dynamic direction carry the day.
