Charismatic crime boss Mack the Knife terrorises Victorian London with help from his Establishment friends. Pabst’s film version of Brecht and Weill’s anti-capitalist satire was fraught with controversy, but its atmospheric lighting and gliding camerawork conjure a world of shadowy corruption, enlivened by the rhythms of Kurt Weill’s insanely catchy score.
