Jean Renoir’s fond tribute to the Paris of his father Auguste deploys a brilliant palette evocative of the Impressionists to colour his leisurely tale of an impresario (Gabin) determined to revive the traditional cancan at the Moulin Rouge. A wry celebration of a simple, unconditional, joyous love of art for art’s sake, it climaxes with one of the finest dance sequences ever filmed.

The screening on Wednesday 12 September will be introduced.
