Elia Kazan’s gripping, sincere and lyrical drama of Roosevelt’s New Deal.
Directed by Elia Kazan
With Jo Van Fleet, Lee Remick, Albert Salmi, Jay C Flippen
Running time 115min
Clift’s facility for quiet determination is put to brilliant use in this engrossing drama of Roosevelt’s New Deal, playing a government official buying up Tennessee riverbank properties prior to a hydro-electric scheme. Standing in his way is Jo Van Fleet’s recalcitrant old-timer, deeply rooted to the land she loves, though the conflict between tradition and modernity is by no means cut-and-dried. Gripping, sincere, lyrical – it’s Kazan and Clift at their not inconsiderable best.
