Trauma, guilt, pain and restorative relationships – this Bergman script has it all.
Dir Gustaf Molander
With Birger Malmsten, Eva Stiberg, Eva Dahlbeck, Stig Olin
Though directed (like the previous year’s Woman Without a Face) by the veteran Molander, this is clearly from a Bergman script, with the protagonist (Malmsten) guilt-ridden over a childhood incident and seeking happiness through his relationship with a woman he knew as a boy. The interest in trauma, guilt, pain and restorative relationships is pure Bergman; the flashback structure also typifies his early style.
