Based on a novel by Henri-Pierre Roché, Truffaut’s much-loved film centres on a love triangle between two poets – one French, one German – and a beautiful woman (the late, lamented Moreau), just before WWI. The film’s attitude towards time is complex: the affair is clearly shaped by its epoch, while the period setting is seen from a decidedly modern (ie 60s) perspective.
