In 1959, in a small English coastal town, recently widowed Florence Green (Mortimer) decides to open a bookshop in the Old House, an abandoned, damp – and allegedly haunted – spot in the centre of town. This causes a stir, since influential socialite Mrs Gamart (Clarkson) is intent on setting up an arts centre in its place, and will use any means necessary to get her way.
