Kurosawa’s combination of crime movie and social commentary has a construction company executive (Mifune) marry the boss’s daughter in order to uncover the facts behind his father’s alleged suicide. Primarily concerned with exposing practices of bribery and corruption in big business (and – it’s implied – government), the film was inspired by both Hamlet and film noir. The ’Scope compositions speak volumes.
