The Bad Sleep Well
Warui yatsu hodo yoko nemuru
Kurosawa’s noirish tale tells of a man investigating his father’s supposed suicide.
The screening on Monday 30 April is cancelled and we apologise for any disappointment.
Dir Akira Kurosawa
With Toshirô Mifune, Takeshi Katô, Masayuki Mori, Takashi Shimura
Kurosawa’s combination of crime movie and social commentary has a construction company executive (Mifune) marry the boss’s daughter in order to uncover the facts behind his father’s alleged suicide. Primarily concerned with exposing practices of bribery and corruption in big business (and – it’s implied – government), the film was inspired by both Hamlet and film noir. The ’Scope compositions speak volumes.
