Director Erik Skjoldbjaerg made his debut with psychological police thriller Insomnia (later remade by Christopher Nolan in 2002), with Stellan Skarsgård as Swedish homicide detective Jonas Engström, sent to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in a small Norwegian town. When he accidentally shoots his partner Erik, he decides to keep it a secret to save his job and carry on the investigation. Plagued with guilt over this accident and unable to sleep because of the constant sunlight of the Norwegian summer, he starts to lose his grip on the investigation and reality, growing dangerously close to the suspects. Widely acclaimed on release, we’re thrilled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this Nordic thriller with lead actor Stellan Skarsgård joining us for a Q&A after the screening.
