Mathieu Kassovitz’s recently restored landmark movie about rising tensions between cops and inhabitants in the Parisian banlieues centres on three friends – Jewish skinhead Vinz, Afro-French boxer Hubert and North African Saïd – who come into possession of a gun after a friend is shot and taken to hospital. The sense of authenticity and urgency is enhanced by Pierre Aïm’s stylish and dynamic monochrome camerawork.
