Kubrick’s stately period drama about a young man’s rise and fall.
Dir Stanley Kubrick
With Ryan O’Neal, Marisa Berenson, Patrick Magee, Marie Kean
Arguably Kubrick’s greatest film, this cool, clinical but finally strangely compassionate adaptation of Thackeray’s novel chronicles the rise and fall of a lowly 18th-century Irish adventurer and gambler, who acquires a fortune and aristocratic kudos when he marries a beautiful widow. The Hogarthian sense of hypocrisy and decadence is perfectly matched by the superb, painterly images and the detached, ironic narration.
