Gurinder Chadha brought her trademark warmth and wit to the story of a teenage girl from Hounslow who finds she has a rare talent on the pitch, a film made at a time when women’s football was still seen as a novelty. To play her, she cast Parminder Nagra, a young actor from a working-class Sikh family who brought huge charm to a film at the junction of feminism, race and class – which is also a feel-good treat.
