You Can Count on Me + intro by Matthew Broderick
A single mother’s life is complicated when her estranged brother returns to town.
Dir Kenneth Lonergan
With Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo, Matthew Broderick
Sammy (Linney) lives and works in the town she grew up in, bringing up her son and keeping down a job in the local bank. The arrival of her estranged brother Terry (Ruffalo) brings along a level of support and complication as they find ways to co-exist and deal with past issues. You Can Count on Me is a beautifully written and performed piece that has authenticity and humanity running through it as it looks at the everyday complexities in human relationships and, in particular, that between brother and sister. Broderick turns in a first class performance as Brian, the pompous, controlling bank manager who Sammy both works for and unexpectedly falls for.
This screening is in association with The Starry Messenger by Kenneth Lonergan, at the Wyndham’s Theatre until 10 August.
