Mabel, a blue-collar housewife with three children, finds herself struggling with domestic and societal expectations. And as her behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, her husband struggles to support her. Gena Rowlands gives Mabel an authenticity and vulnerability that is both raw and profoundly compassionate. Cassavetes’ camera, meanwhile, refuses to cut away, capturing his protagonist’s desperate behaviour without any varnish. This is an uncomfortable yet vital portrait of a woman’s psychological breakdown.
