Sam Peckinpah’s famously violent but elegiac western centres on a band of outlaws undone by a changing world.
Dir Sam Peckinpah
With William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oates
Sam Peckinpah’s once-controversial movie, now widely regarded as a classic, depicts the passing of the West from the perspective of an anachronistic band of outlaws, outdone by technological progress and new codes of ‘honour’ at the start of the 20th century. If the energies and impulses celebrated and mourned are grounded in macho values, the film nevertheless has a dark, haunting lyricism.
