In a small, pre-First World War German village, strange and violent occurrences punctuate the strict order by which the local community lives. Residents are known only by their job titles, with each role clearly established. But something rotten, lurking under the surface, is gradually bleeding out into the community. Beautifully photographed, with an almost clinical clarity, this is a haunting fairytale of suspicion, corruption and collective guilt.
Contains themes of animal cruelty, suicide, incest and harm to children.
