Two ageing sisters (one a former child star) live in an old Hollywood mansion, both scarred by their lack of relevance to the modern world and by a terrible family secret that hangs over them. It’s impossible to watch the film now without being conscious of the behind-the-scenes stories of the Davis-Crawford feud, yet both actors are glorious, and this is a cast-iron Grand Guignol classic of the highest quality.
