Fassbinder was enormously impressed and influenced by Godard’s early work, and this portrait of a prostitute – structured as 12 vignettes and peppered with cinephile tributes – was unsurprisingly, given its theme and Brechtian aesthetic, one of his great favourites. At once analytical and emotionally affecting, the film is also a hymn to the beguiling beauty of the director’s wife and muse.
