Made in Spain after his lengthy Mexican exile, Buñuel’s tale of an idealistic young nun visiting her uncle and finding her best intentions besieged by corruption and cynicism was promptly (and unsurprisingly) banned by Franco’s censors. Cruel yet compassionate, cool yet knowingly controversial, and boasting a black, near-blasphemous parody of the ‘Last Supper,’ it was bound to win Fassbinder’s admiration.
