Oscar®-nominee Imelda Staunton gives an emotionally overwhelming performance as the eponymous cleaning lady with a heart of gold and an ever-ready pot of tea in postwar London, helping out girls with unwanted pregnancies. Her good actions are illegal, but Leigh’s actors create a world of decency and the pulling together of a close-knit community. Design, costumes and Dick Pope’s cinematography are as meticulous as you could wish for.
