Bonnaire gives an indelible portrayal, presented through a series of flashbacks, of a wandering woman who has refused all the comforts of bourgeois convention, to drift ‘without roof or law’, hitching across the frozen vineyards, windy fields and small roads of Southern France. Varda’s invention of Mona, like Loden’s Wanda, fuses elements of fact and fiction into an evocation of an uncompromising life lived with fierce self-determination and in a state of precarity.
