Joseph H Lewis’ impressive thriller has Glenn Ford’s Federal Treasury agent trying to nail a Capone-like gangster for tax evasion after other methods fail; true to life, his efforts have as much to do with paperwork as with action, though witnesses are silenced and innocent bystanders injured as the hunt proceeds. Gritty cinematography by Burnett Guffey (who also shot Lewis’ Gun Crazy) enhances the aura of authenticity.
