Impromptu eye surgery, ants pouring out of hands, a mysterious box… When Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel collaborated on their iconic statement of surrealism in film, they sabotaged the rulebook on cinematic narrative and decorum, instead taking their inspiration from dreams. The film went on to formidable success despite extreme audience reactions. Screening from an original release print – the oldest ever projected to a UK audience – it displays remarkable image quality for its age, though is slightly short due to a multitude of splices.

When a Parisian family sets off for a day trip on the rural banks of the Seine, a seduction game disrupts marriage plans, with lasting consequences. Production on Renoir’s film began in the summer of 1936, but poor weather led to delays. Then, when Renoir was called on to direct Les Bas-Fonds, the film was shelved, unfinished. A decade later, a re-edit of the footage was released and it became recognised as one of Renoir’s greatest works. Wear your Breton top and let yourself be enchanted by the film’s bucolic charm. Screening from a weathered but beautiful-looking original UK release print.
