Jacques Demy’s marvellous all-sung musical pits a young couple’s deep passion for one another against an interfering mother, the Algerian War and economic realities – not to mention unexpected pregnancy. That the insights into the strength of love and mutual trust are bittersweet and ironic makes Demy’s absolute commitment to Legrand’s romantic score, the saturated colours and the hints of fairy tale all the more beguiling.
