A retired college professor, forced to live on an inadequate pension in post-war Rome, struggles to pay his overdue rent while trying to maintain his dignity in a society that no longer has a place for him. Rigorously observed and poetic in its account of daily life, De Sica’s favourite of his own films anticipated cinema verité and Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, while its expressionist and Chaplinesque moments make it an emotionally potent portrait of poverty.
