In this fast-paced, comedic A Star is Born (made before the first of those), John Barrymore is perfect as the hammy Oscar Jaffe, the once-great Broadway director. He had discovered and then was surpassed by actress Lily Garland (Lombard). The former couple meet again on board the Twentieth Century train to Hollywood, where life gets turned upside down. The zany train journey is a precursor to the comedic spirit of the train scenes in Richard Lester’s A Hard Day’s Night.
